Sustainable Construction: Industrialised, Integrated, Intelligent
Call for Papers

I3CON is an industry-led collaborative research project, part-funded by the EU. Commencing in October 2006, it is a 4-year project involving 26 partners from 14 countries across Europe. The aim of I3CON is to facilitate the transformation towards a sustainable European construction industry and as part of this the I3CON consortium will publish a book for construction stakeholders in 2009.

 

For this book we are inviting external authors to send contributions, supporting sustainable development in construction, which is defined by WCED (World Commission on Environment and Development) as “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED 1987).

 

Overall Objective & Content Structure:

The overall objective of this book will be to share and promote different methods, techniques, services, technologies and new ways of collaboration aimed at sustainable construction for the construction industry to promote innovation and to attain sustainability in the construction industry.

 

The book will consist of several parts corresponding to different types of contents, e.g.:

  • stakeholder requirements and visions;
  • new business models;
  • services and service delivery;
  • systems and components;
  • processes and models;
  • ICT integration.

Demonstration cases will present tested theories and approaches based on real life application examples and new ideas will provide insights into the development direction for the future of construction industry.

 

Background:

In today’s business, the use of innovative components and technologies in the construction sector is getting increasingly important. In this development the application of new business models that bridge the gap between planners and operators play a crucial role to enhance the sustainable application of these solutions.

 

The goal of the book is to show technological and procedural innovations to enable the delivery of high-performance buildings and to disseminate the possibility of transformation towards a sustainable European construction industry. Recommended Topics: Authors are invited to present proposals covering different areas related to sustainable construction. Below is a list of some potential topics:

  • Functionality of buildings
  • Integration of building services with structural or architectural components
  • Innovative building systems and components
  • Industrialised construction methods
  • New management processes
  • Customer integration in the construction (decision making) process
  • Industrial business model
  • Monitoring building needs
  • Environment consideration (healthy environment, resource efficiency etc.)

Target audience:

The prime audience of the book is industry practitioners, construction stakeholders (architects, consultants, building owners and users, organisations with legislative power and others), researchers and academia with an interest in the development and application of new effective techniques, methods, components and materials. This book will provide a set of practical methods to be applied in construction, present new services and components, and will foster further development and acceptance of new approaches, theories and ideas.

 

Submission Procedure:

We would like to invite expressions of interest in the form of extended abstract proposals from authors wishing to contribute to this book. Abstracts should address areas relating to sustainability and innovations in construction. They may contain description of practical application cases or theoretical considerations. For topical inspiration, please refer to the list of recommended topics, though the expected contents are not restricted by this list.

Extended abstracts should not contain more that 1000 words and should be presented in the following form (sent to: editors at i3con dot org):

  • Title: The paper title should be 10 words or less.
  • Author(s): Provide contact details for each author including name, surname, organisation, and email.
  • Keywords: Provide up to 6 keywords.
  • Context: Describe the situation/problem addressed in your paper.
  • Approach: Describe here in brief the methods, approaches or tools that were used to address the depicted situation.
  • Summary: Provide a short summary of expected or achieved results.

Timeline overview:

  • 31 March 2009: Submission of abstracts
  • 31 April 2009: Feedback on abstracts, invitation to submit full articles
  • 31 July 2009: Submission of full articles
  • 31 October 2009: Reviewers comments returned
  • 30 November 2009: Submission of corrections

Early submissions are more than welcome and an early decision regarding their acceptance and publication will be made.
